The other day I took Mia to the playground at our local park, and I saw a mum using a jogging stroller with her baby inside.
This is a rare sight indeed.
Maybe it’s just me, but I could count on one hand the number of times I’ve seen someone using a jogging stroller in the UK.
Is it more popular in the US? Or in other countries in the world?
Because in London, although I’ve seen plenty of 3 wheel strollers, I’ve very rarely see them used when parents go jogging.
Maybe mums and dads are more lazy in my neighbourhood 🙂
Choosing between a three-wheel and a four-wheel stroller can make a world of difference in how easily your stroller handles, how safe you feel when taking your baby on the go, and whether or not your stroller can keep up with you.
I thought for this article, I would delve into the pros and cons of both, so you can understand the difference between these two types of stroller and help you reach the right decision.
What are strollers?
This might sound a basic question, but there are various labels used for “baby transportation devices”, namely pushchairs, strollers, buggies and prams.
Strollers are simply a piece of equipment that have wheels, a place for a baby to sit or lay down comfortably when on the road, and handles for the stroller to be pushed.
They come in a wide variety of sizes and styles, so parents can easily choose from a number of different features and benefits when looking for the best stroller for their child.
They range from being very inexpensive and lightweight to high-end strollers that are packed with features and designed not only to keep the baby comfortable on the road, but also to keep the adult who is pushing the stroller happy as well.
3-Wheel Strollers – Overview
Three-wheel strollers are also known as jogging strollers and are ideal for parents who are very active and want to be able to bring their baby or child with them on the go.
While they were originally designed for parents who want to take their baby on the run, they are a great option for parents to use even when they aren’t jogging.
Three-wheel strollers have two wheels in the back and a third wheel in the front, making them very easy to control and maneuver.
In general, these strollers are designed to be very durable, have air-filled tires that are sure to offer a smooth and shock-free ride, and often come with additional safety features.
Look for features like hand brakes and even wrist straps when buying a three-wheel stroller so that you can always be in control of your stroller.
Some of these strollers have the ability to lock the front wheel into place when on the road, which makes it great for brisk walking.
One problem that some parents have when buying these strollers is that they tend to be larger than four-wheel strollers. It’s important to consider whether or not the stroller will easily fit in the car and how difficult it is to fold it up by yourself.
Another common issue is that no matter how high-quality the front wheel is, it will likely go flat at some point. This means that it will need to be blown up, patched, or replaced before the stroller will work again.
4-Wheel Strollers – Overview
Four-wheel strollers are incredibly popular, easy to find in stores, and commonly seen on the road.
They are great for parents who are looking for a safe way to transport their baby but who aren’t necessary going to be running with them and pushing them in the stroller at the same time.
Unlike three-wheel strollers, these tend to fold flat quickly, and many have a “one hand” feature that allows the adult to fold them flat while still holding a baby at the same time.
Because of this as well as other features, four-wheel strollers are known for being easy to use and durable. They often come with extra space for carrying supplies such as clothes, snacks, and a first aid kit, and many four-wheel strollers even have cup holders by the handles.
You can also get smaller sized 4 wheel strollers, which are great for travelling.
One downside to four-wheel strollers is that they simply aren’t as durable as three-wheel strollers, but this is how they are designed. Four-wheel strollers are not meant to be taken on rough terrain or used when jogging.
Parents who need a more durable stroller or one that can go with them anywhere will be better suited opting for a three-wheel stroller instead.
How will you use your stroller?
The first thing that you need to consider is how you are going to be using your new stroller.
If you are very active and want to take your baby on jogs or long walks around the park, you will want to consider a three-wheel stroller rather than a four-wheel one.
On the other hand, if you are just looking for a safe way to transport your baby and take occasional walks, then a four-wheel stroller may be perfect for you.
What safety features should I look for?
Everyone wants their baby to be as safe as possible when in a stroller, so it’s important that you consider the available safety features when shopping.
Look for a stroller that has a durable frame which locks securely into position. You also need to make sure that the stroller doesn’t have any sharp edges that could injure the baby.
Check the harness to make sure that it is a five-point system, as these are the safest kinds of harnesses that you can use.
They will wrap between the child’s legs, around their waist, and over their shoulders, and should have a buckle that is simple to open, but which won’t pop open on its own.
Is it ok to hang a bag on the stroller?
Many parents hang diaper bags on their strollers so that they can take their belongings with them when on the go.
Unfortunately, this isn’t safe and can cause the stroller to become unstable and even to tip.
It’s a much better idea to buy a stroller that has ample storage space underneath the child’s seat.
How do you keep it clean?
Regularly washing your stroller cover or fabric is important to keep it clean. Look for a stroller than has a removable cover and seat so that you can wash it without stains and messes building up over time.
Summary – Are 3 wheel strollers better than 4?
Choosing between a three- and four-wheel stroller is a personal decision, but as you can see each one has its own pros and cons.
If you’re quite active and like the idea of something more lightweight and easy to move, then a 3-wheel stroller might be the way to go.
Just make sure that you have a stroller that meets your needs and which you know how to safely use so you don’t ever have to worry about putting your child in danger.
